Parable of the Baking Soda

A Lesson Learned: by Robin Thomas

So, yesterday I made pancakes for dinner. And they looked great! It wasn’t until we took a bite that we realized there was something slightly off. It tasted really salty, too much like baking soda, but I went over the ingredients in my mind and I had done everything right, I thought.

Well, my mind wouldn’t shut down until I knew what was wrong. So, conveniently, cough, cough, I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that I had used baking soda instead of baking powder. They look the same but they have very different results. Whereas the pancakes looked great, light and fluffy, good color, the taste was slightly off.

I think that is how it is with our lives when we don’t seek God’s best, or even know what that is. It looks great on the outside, but the taste is slightly off. It’s the difference between “fine” and “best”. It wasn’t until I really put some thought into it that I uncovered the reason for the “off taste”. And the subtlety is ironic when the results are so different.

It’s “fine” to just follow the rules and coast along in your relationship with God, but it is “the

best” when you take time to “Seek Him first” and really think hard on His Word and

what would be better.

So what did I learn?

When you are not “on guard” and paying close attention, Satan can slip in a substitute that looks good, but the result is an “It’s fine” rather than a “The best” result.

Ephesians 6:11

“Put on the full armor of God that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
