She Had Time For Me.

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

A Lesson Learned: by Robin Thomas

She had time for me.

That girl whose face shines back at me from hundreds of photos around my home. That priceless smile that took 12 pulled teeth and $6600 in orthodontic care has a light that goes beyond the straightness of her teeth. Her light shines from within. She is an angel that was delivered to me one Thanksgiving week in 2002.

That girl comes from a long line of very strong and stubborn women. She has done us proud. That little girl who refused to go on the sky ride at the Oakland Zoo because she hated the feeling of being out of control said, I quote, “You can’t make me.” Make her I did not, but I finally talked her into it.

That girl who can figure out mysteries because of the endless episodes of NCIS she watched with her dad.

That girl who wanted so much to be able to read the books that her friends did when she was in elementary school that she had to endure weeks of vision therapy to strengthen her eyes to be able to focus and comprehend.

That girl who marched herself up to the counter of the Yogurt shop to inform them that her little brother lost his quarter in their toy machine and it didn’t give him the toy. Oh yeah, they gave it back.

That girl who changed groups in high school because one of her friends was being mistreated.

That girl has a light that shines from within.

My hair stylist, Juliet, who sadly passed away this year, once said about her, “She has an aura about her, a light, she will do something great.” Juliet is probably having a conversation with God about her right now

“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” ~Maya Angelou

This year she left me for College. Thank you technology for the invention of Facetime and texting. I thought going away to college was supposed to be harder on the kid, not the parent. Boy, was I wrong!

I was so happy when she came home for the summer.

Today, she had time for me.

This morning did not go the way I planned. I asked her if she wanted to go get coffee. She was getting ready to go meet a friend, but she said, “Sure, let’s go get coffee.”

It didn’t take long. We drove down the hill and went to the local coffee shop, I got a Lavender Latte, and then she dropped me off. It made all the difference.

Will she ever know what that few minutes did for me?

What will it mean to someone, who asks you to get together, when you say yes, even if you really don’t have the time? Could it be that the light within you will shine into their soul and speak the name of Jesus?

A beautiful song I heard this week at church was I SPEAK JESUS https://youtu.be/QKgzYsg295g

The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Psalm 19:8
